The New York 20

by 27 Jun 2020Where to go next?

In the 1600s you could trust the British to seize new territory, particularly the east coast of what is now the United States. In 1664 the British took control of the Dutch territory of New Netherland and renamed it after the Duke of York to New York. New York has been renowned throughout history for a variety of reasons. However, today the City is famous for its broadways, bagels, museums, and food. Here are Holiday Swap’s twenty favorite things to do in the City this summer.

Food in New York

The Frying Pan

What could you want more in the summer than drinks, food and a great view of the historic lightship from 1929? We recommend going just before sunset with a group of friends.

Smorgasburg

Smorgasburg is the biggest outside food market in the U.S. and there are conveniently 3 locations in NY to try new foods or just eat from your favorite restaurants like Roberta’s Pizza.

Westfield World Trade Center is open on Fridays, Williamsburg on Saturdays and Prospect Park on Sundays.

Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream

Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream is a New York native and possibly has some of the best ice creams in NY. We recommend the Mint Chip and Salted Carmel. They also have vegan options available.

Chelsea Market

Chelsea Market can be hell on the weekends, but their never-ending options of food stand can make it worth it … or just going during the week.

Eataly

NYC Flatiron is home to Eataly – a great place to stop by for some pizza, gelato, wine and all things actually Italian. Bring home some of their hand made pasta and you’ll feel like you just took a quick trip to Rome.

Murray’s Cheese Bar

What started out as a cheese store has become one of our favorite NY restaurants and they have just opened a second part just for mac & cheese.

Tals Bagels

Traditional NY bagels with every topping or cream cheese you could want. Trust us, it’s good.

Gallow Green

Looking for a rooftop bar? Try Gallow Green. There is plenty of outdoor garden space and fireplaces for those chilly nights.

Entertainment in New York

SummerStage

Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage is held outside in Central Park from June to October. It’s a great performing arts festival with over 100 acts and most of the shows have free entry.

Broadway Show

Treat yourself to one of the many Broadways from fan favorites like “The Book of Mormon” and “Dear Evan Hansen” to “Mean Girls” (yes, Mean Girls is on Broadway).

Comedy Cellar

In need of a good laugh and some great drinks? Head to an evening show at Comedy Cellar. Just make sure to make reservations beforehand.

House of Yes

Looking for a good night out? They market themselves as “weird, wild and wonderful” and we can’t disagree. If you want to dress up (literally, to the theme of the night) and see some impressive performances, head to House of Yes.

Nitehawk Cinema

With two locations in Williamsburg and Prospect Park, you’ll definitely want to see your next film here. Nitehawk Cinema isn’t your average cinema. They offer a brunch and dinner menu (with vegan and gluten-free options) along with a long list of snacks, cocktails, wine, and beer.

Activities and Culture

The Whitney Museum and Chelsea Highline

If it is a nice day, take a walk along the Chelsea Highline until you reach the end where the new Whitney Museum is located. If you don’t want to go for the incredible American art collection, then go for the views. From May 17 to September 22, the museum will be exhibiting the Whitney Biennial.

The Met and Met Breuer

If you are heading to the famous Metropolitan Museum of Art make sure you also walk through Central Park to maximize your cultural experience. You could spend all day at the Met looking through the different exhibitions. If you want to tackle something smaller (but just as worthy) try the Met Breuer on Madison Ave. They also have some of the best coffee in NY downstairs in their café.

Day Trips

If the sky is clear and you want to venture outside of the City, take a ferry to Governors Island (they have various events all summer) or Rockaway for a day at the beach.

Kayaking

Not only will you have a great time kayaking, but you can get some of the best views of the City from the Hudson River. Manhattan Community Boathouse has two locations offering free kayaking.

Rowboats in Central Park

If you’re not ready to conquer the Hudson River, head to Central Park’s Loeb Boathouse and take out a rowboat for $15 per hour.

The Golf Club at the Chelsea Piers

Head to the driving range looking out onto the Hudson River that features an automatic ball tee-up system. (This will be a great first stop before heading over to the Frying Pan!)

Bike Ride

Citi bank offers bikes all around the City. Take out a bike and ride along the East River for some incredible views and fresh air in New York.
